League Play

League Play is a way to sharpen your mahjong game and connect with others players through competitive play! Each season format is unique - from individual format, to scramble, to team competition! Players meet weekly to compete in head-to-head matches! Each "season" will be hosted in 4 to 6 weeks and lead up to a Grand Championship or tournament as a final test of skill.

Note: League Play is NOT lessons - players must be able to play independently to participate.

how League Play works

The Basics

Format can be individual players or teams.
Each team will have a roster with a minimum of 2 players and a maximum of 6 players.
Each team will create a team name (get creative).
Each team will designate a Captain to schedule games and report scores.
League Play will be at the same day/time and location each week, to be announced before registration opens.
League Play will be played round robin or ladder style with new opponents each week.
All players are invited weekly for open play, regardless if they are competing in the match ups or not (individual scores towards season winner - more games = more points!)
No team? No problem! Indicate “None” for Team Captain on your registration form and WTX MHL will pair you up with other unaffiliated players - instant new friends!

The Match Ups

WTX MJL will determine the matches at random and send out the match schedule before the season starts.
Team Captains will be responsible for determining which two players will compete each week. Players must be registered on the team roster - no subs allowed.
If a team does not have the required players available for the match day, Team Captains can agree to reschedule, but matches must be played before the next scheduled match. The opponent has the option to not reschedule. If the match is forfeited, the team with the original conflict will receive 0 points and the opposing team will receive 50 points.
Please be on time. A team will also forfeit if the required players are not present within 15 minutes from the time the match starts. The team that arrives late will take a 20 point penalty to begin the match. Individual players will also not be able to play for individual points if they are not present at the match round begins.
The team with the highest combined score will win the match.
All team members are welcome to open play on match day. Scores for individuals at open League Play will also be recorded and count towards season winner - more games = better chance of winning!

The Rules

WTX MJL will follow the rules printed on the National Mahjongg League Card, except for scoring. Season will be played with the most recent NMJL card when when the season starts.
HOME team will provide tiles, mat, racks, dice. Matches will be played with 8 jokers and no blanks.
Set up of walls should not begin until at least one player from each team is present.
HOME team will begin as East and will rotate dealer (Home/Away/Home/Away).
East will roll dice to break the first wall for the deal.
SCORING/WIN: If the tile is drawn rather than called to complete mahjong, the winner receives value of the hand +10 points. If mahjong is won from a called discard tile, the winner scores the value of the hand and the discarding player receives a penalty of -10 points for each exposure from the winning hand. If mahjong is won without jokers (“pure”) the winner receives an additional +10 point bonus (except for Singles and Pairs). Wall games each player scores 10 points. Exception: Any hand called dead or forfeited before the wall game ends scores 0 points.
All matches will be one round limited to 55 minutes. Any hands not completed at the end of the time will score 0 points for all players.
Jokers may not be traded between players in the Charleston.
All scores will be recorded and verified by the team Captains on the day of the match up. Photos of scorecards from matches played outside of normal League Play should be emailed to wtxmahjong@gmail.com for recordkeeping.
Please be on time. Matches will start within 15-30 minutes of scheduled start of League Play. If team does not have two players at the start of the match, they will forfeit the match and score 0 points. Opponent will score 50 points for the match.
Players are expected to be honest and respectful at all times. Misconduct of any kind will not be tolerated and should be reported to WTX MJL. Violating players will be suspended from the league without refund of dues.
Thank you for limiting texts/phone calls during game play.

The Winners

Season Champion will be determined by the team with the most match wins. In the event of a tie, the team highest cumulative score for the season wins. Season Champions will receive cash prize and team trophy!
Individual Season Champion will be determined by highest cumulative score for the season. Champion will receive a trophy and voucher for free registration to a future WTX MJL Tournament or League Play Season of their choice.
Results and scores will be posted on the league communication channels throughout the season.
